Two years ago, on Valentine’s Day, some of the big rigs protesting in Ottawa moved up onto Wellington Street. Those trucks had been parked on Albert Street, Metcalfe Street, and elsewhere. Their relocation was part of an agreement the truckers had negotiated with the city of Ottawa.
Eight Jonker trucks were involved, as well as some from western Canada. Shortly afterward, people started talking about a friendly game of hockey. The newcomers would face off against the truckers who’d been sitting on Wellington for weeks.
The game was scheduled for the following weekend, but the police crackdown started that Friday, and it never took place. Two weeks from now - on Saturday, February 17th (Family Day long weekend) - it will happen at last. Convoy truckers, including several from Jonker Trucking, will be gathering at an outdoor rink in Hamilton. At least one trucker from western Canada is expected to be there. With luck, there may be others.
This sounds like a fabulous, family event. Bring the kids. Enjoy some free hot dogs and chili. Make a donation toward the ongoing court cases. The exact address isn’t being publicized ahead of time. (Venues in which similar events have been planned have been harassed, leading to last minute cancellations.)
An organizer advises: “People are welcome to bring Timmies Take 10s (coffee or hot chocolate), donuts, or baked goods in keeping with the sharing vibe of the Convoy.” If you’re able to attend, please RSVP to FreedomEvents2020@gmail.com, giving them a heads up if you plan on bringing something. The venue address will be emailed to you.
Later that day, at a different location closer to Cambridge, Ontario a second event is scheduled. Tamara Lich and her husband, Dwayne, will perform. This is a 19+ fundraiser, with a cash bar. Tickets are $50, finger foods included.
Doors open at 6:30. The Kristin Nicholls Band is expected to take the stage around 7 pm, with the main event starting around 8 pm. Harold Jonker and cross-border trucker Csaba Vizi from Windsor, Ontario will be special guests.
Csaba is the trucker in this photo, taken by me in Ottawa ↓
I will promote this hockey game through all my channels as it is local to me! Thanks for letting me know Donna. I expect to be there!
No F TRUDEAU signs allowed... hahaha 🤣😂🤣😂 classic!! ...btw, there are at least three of those signs on our street alone - and kids from two schools have seen them every single day for years now. So many that turd brain would need more than two hands to count them all. WE (not the 'charity’) can all understand the hockey game doesn't want to be associated with an organizer of Nazi MP House of Commons clap-a-thon. Game on!!!
