It really does all come down to the fact that many, many Canadians support, continue to support, forced vaccinations. As you say, a civilized society doesn't do this sort of thing, and those Canadians who did and still do support it will carry the burden of shame forever. A voluntary program with fully informed consent would have been the best choice, and likely - my opinion of course - would have led to a majority of Canadians getting the shots anyway.

I have always been an optimistic person. I've always believed we're collectively humane and sensible, and that we eventually figure out that certain government policies are damaging or foolish. Sometimes it takes a couple of election cycles for that to happen.

COVID has, I'm sorry to say, altered my view. Far too many people seem entirely comfortable with government coercion. If that's the case when there's no actual emergency (COVID is nothing like the Bubonic Plague, and we knew that within the first few months) imagine the coercion some people would support if matters actually were dire.
