Shoveling the Walk
The truckers & their supporters weren't professional activists. They were responsible citizens, used to hard work.
Two years ago, an enormous amount of food preparation took place outdoors in Ottawa. After putting their own lives on hold, a southern Ontario family of five spent three weeks feeding truckers down on the Sir John A Macdonald Parkway. (Click here for more details.)
Likewise, a professional cook from Quebec prepared meals for a city block of truckers, many of whom were from western Canada. They called her Mama Sandra, and she now considers them family. (More info here.)
Garbage bags were plentiful during the week I spent in Ottawa. Litter was quickly picked up. Determined and ingenious souls regularly gathered up the trash, loaded it onto carts, and removed it from the downtown core.
Shovels were everywhere. I saw them used frequently. As Matt Alexander says, above, “Name one other protest group” that would have shoveled the walk.
