Double Standards, Convoy Edition
Does the media run headlines declaring that 'Not all black people support BLM?'
On Thursday January 27th, 2022 before any tuckers were in downtown Ottawa and two days before the western arm of the Freedom Convoy had even arrived, Canadian journalists were in full smear mode.
CTV published an online article titled 'Embarrassment for the industry': Not all truckers support the 'freedom convoy.' It was the view of Dennis Levesque, a London, Ontario-based trucker, that the Convoy would harm the reputation of the trucking industry overall. Having been a trucker for eight years, he’s certainly entitled to his opinion. But let me ask you this:
When Black Lives Matter protesters are preparing to demonstrate, does the media run headlines declaring that “Not all black people support BLM”?
When feminists announce they’re organizing a rally, does the media undermine it before it even happens by proclaiming that “not all women agree”?
If anyone can find even one example of the above, I’d love to see it.
Post Script:
In June 2020, individuals associated with a BLM protest in Montreal smashed windows, looted stores, and lit fires, damaging dozens of businesses. A Canadian Press report, published in the Toronto Star, contained these paragraphs (bold added by me):
Stephanie Germain, one of the organizers of the protest, described the vandalism as “unfortunate” but said the focus should remain on police brutality.
“Unfortunately, when you organize a protest...there’s always going to be a group of people doing that,” she said.
…One of the businesses targeted by looters was Steve’s Music Store on Ste-Catherine Street, where looters smashed windows and stole guitars and other valuable equipment, according to an employee reached by phone.
“We don’t even know (the extent of the damage). It just looks like a hurricane came through here,” said Lenny Lanteigne, who added that some protesters used guitars to smash other guitars.
Good Lord. Nice catch, Donna - a fine demonstration of what happens when someone thinks critically.
“Unfortunately, when you organize a protest...there’s always going to be a group of people doing that,” she said.
Except: The Truckers convoy was exceptionally large, lasted 3 weeks and there was no violence or property damage. Well, except for what was done by the Police under the PM's orders.
