Part 1: The Professor & the Bouncy Castles

In the space of three days, University of Ottawa professor Thomas Juneau twice said the bouncy castles at the trucker protest were a ruse, a deliberate deception that promoted “the myth of a peaceful protest.”

Oddly, two weeks after they first appeared on Wellington Street, he was still talking about a single bouncy castle - rather than waves of them.

Pay no attention to that bouncy castle, he said - it’s just an info op. He presented no evidence. He expected us to take his word for it. He is, after all, an expert.

In the replies, someone advised him that there had been “more than one inflatable for the kids.”

Yet the next day, Professor Juneau was still talking about a single big bad wolf of a bouncy castle. Again, he dismissed what was happening as “nothing more than an info op to try to mask the reality…” Gullible people were being fooled.

It seems to me it’s far more likely that an info op would involve individuals such as professors. The sort who make adamant declarations before learning the most rudimentary facts.

Bianca, the Quebec woman who brought the bouncy castles to Ottawa, is mama to two boys. The positive energy she encountered in Ottawa was beyond anything she expects to experience ever again. When she looked around, she says, what was missing was a Kids’ Corner. The pandemic had been hard on youngsters. Kids needed to just be kids.

Here’s a key quote from my interview with Bianca: "It's not just I make bouncy castle and that's it. No, no it's really a process." Over a period of three weeks, she was the driving force behind several kid-oriented activities and services. The bouncy castles were just one of these.
