As Truck Horns Shriek
Protesters stand between truckers and police, singing the national anthem.

Tomorrow is Canada Day. Our country’s national anthem talks about standing ‘on guard’ with ‘true patriot love’ for our ‘glorious and free’ nation.
Above is a video recorded on Friday, February 18th. That’s the day police horses trampled an indigenous woman, sending her to hospital with a broken collarbone.
The video shows a small group of protesters - women and men, French and English-speaking, younger and older - supporting the truckers arm-in-arm. Several people are recording events with their mobile phones.
Behind the police are military-looking vehicles. As the police line advances, protesters defiantly sing the national anthem. A few approach the officers and attempt to speak to them. A man repeatedly urges those in the vicinity to form a line - and to hold that line.
Truck horns shriek in distress.

This is what Canada looks like in 2022. Many reasons to be alarmed. But many reasons to feel optimistic.
