When someone denies you access to your own money, there’s a name for that. It’s called financial abuse.
In February 2022, the Canadian government conspired with bank executives and the police to freeze credit cards, debit cards, and bank accounts. No semblance of due process occurred beforehand. No judges, no court orders, no checks or balances.
Canada doesn’t freeze the bank accounts of murderers. Or of rapists. Even after they’ve been convicted in a court of law - never mind beforehand. Yet that’s how peaceful protesters were treated. Hard working truckers and folks suspected of aiding those truckers.
In paragraph 96 of his January 2024 ruling declaring the Emergencies Act unlawful and unconstitutional, Justice Richard Mosley wrote:
Superintendent [Denis] Beaudoin…developed the process used by the RCMP for sharing information with financial institutions. The [government] did not specify [how to]…identify individuals or entities that met the definition of "designated person”. Making it up as they went along, the RCMP developed a template for sharing information…about persons believed to be directly or indirectly involved in activities prohibited under the [Emergencies Act]. [bold added]
Making it up as they went along. Banks restricted people’s access to their own money - after the government told them to. Without a court order. Without a fight. Government was being abusive. It was crossing some pretty big lines. Canadian banks didn’t try to stop that abuse.
Succinctly said!
It is a damn outrage. And people turn and look away if you bring it up. One day it could be their bank account but it will be harder to fight back then.
